BJJ is a martial arts system that focuses on grappling, ground control and submissions. Focusing on skill and leverage, it allows a smaller person to overcome someone larger and much stronger. Its success in the UFC, Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) and as a form of self-defense is unparalleled.
Jiu-Jitsu was first introduced to Brazil by Mitsuyo Maeda who had studied Kodokan Judo as a top student of Jigoro Kano, the founder of modern judo. Kano sent Maeda along with many such students out to spread judo around the world. For some time, he traveled the globe challenging fighters of various fighting styles, including Carlos Gracie in Brazil, who became his student.
Gracie eventually passed along his knowledge to brothers Osvaldo, Gastao Jr., Jorge and Helio. As a family, they developed Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu or BJJ as we know it today.
Following in the tradition is Fernando Zulick , Action & Reaction MMAs head BJJ instructor. A native of Brazil, Fernando has over 18 years of experience as a BJJ coach, instructor and competitor under his belt.
His BJJ lineage: Helio Gracie – Flavio Behring – Sylvio Behring – Fernando Zulick.
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is above all:
• A martial art
• A competitive combat sport
• A system of self-defense
It’s a martial art that’s based on the premise that a smaller and weaker person can defend against a larger and stronger opponent using leverage and technique to overcome advantages in size and strength. It’s ideal for anyone of any size; young and old; kids and adults and those wanting to learn self-defense techniques, bully-proof their kids or compete in amateur or professional Mixed Martial Arts (MMA).
Outside of the competitive world, BJJ is a great way for anyone to get and stay fit and learn effective self-defense techniques.
BJJ’s emphasis on leverage and skill for overcoming larger, stronger opponents makes it an ideal form of self-defense training. A proficient BJJ practitioner should be able to take any assailant down to the ground and use his or her knowledge of body mechanics to gain the upper hand. An experienced practitioner of BJJ is able to anticipate an attacker’s action beforehand and react accordingly to nullify the attack.
BJJ has made a huge splash in the world of MMA since it was first introduced to the United States in the 1990’s and its success among professional Mixed Martial Artists speaks for itself. Many past and present UFC champions attribute their titles and success in the Octagon to BJJ – Anderson Silva, Jose Aldo, BJ Penn, and GSP to name just a few.
As a mixed martial artist, it gives you a range of techniques and strategies for the all-important ground game. Taking your opponent down to the ground eliminates much of the advantage of bigger size and superior strength and reach. It’s the way to equalize an unequal contest.
Studying BJJ will give you powerful new moves and techniques to add to your MMA arsenal. You’ll also gain a new understanding of body mechanics that you’ll be able to use in many situations.
When it comes to submissions (chokes, arm locks, leg locks and wrist locks) BJJ wins hands down among all martial arts.
BJJ is geared towards a student who wants a challenging, total body workout. It offers generous cardio training and free sparring (“rolling”) as part of its allure. It also promotes tactical problem solving and has been described, along with Judo, as ‘chess done with the entire body.’
In BJJ, students get real life hands-on experience, making it an excellent form of exercise and highly effective form of self-defense.
BJJ is the ideal martial art for kids; designed so that a smaller person can defend against and overcome a larger, stronger opponent. Because it relies on skill and technique over brute strength, BJJ is often referred to as “the gentle art”.
BJJ classes will give your children much more than effective martial arts training. They’ll gain confidence and improve their overall fitness levels. Regular practise will help your child to maintain a healthy weight and fitness level.
At Action & Reaction MMA, we also emphasize maintaining an atmosphere of mutual respect in a friendly and supportive class environment. We’re rewarded with lots of smiles at the end of every class.
