WHAT IS MUAY THAI KICKBOXING?

Muay Thai Kickboxing – aka Thai Boxing or Thai Kickboxing – is the cultural martial art of Thailand. It focuses on stand-up striking as well as clinching techniques. A person who is studying Muay Thai is known as a ‘nak muay’.
Muay Thai is one of many forms of kickboxing practiced in Southeast Asia and is often referred to as the “Art of Eight Limbs” or the “Science of Eight Limbs” because it uses eight points of contact:

  • Shins
  • Knees
  • Fists
  • Elbows

This comes in contrast to martial arts which use only two points (i.e. two fists) or four (i.e. two hands and two feet). It gives the skilled Muay Thai practitioner an arsenal of potentially devastating techniques, is a great way to get fit and a highly effective method of self-defense.
THE HISTORY OF MUAY THAI

Some people claim that Muay Thai’s origins go back thousands of years; certainly it’s been in practice in Thailand for centuries. It derives from the ancient practice of Muay Boran or “ancient Boxing”, a form of unarmed combat used by Siamese warriors in situations where they had lost their weapons in battle.
Muay Thai Kickboxing spread when King Chulalongkorn ascended the throne of Thailand in 1868. The King was personally interested in the art and promoted it as an ideal form of physical exercise, self-defense and recreation. A later monarch, King Rama VII (1925-35) formalized the rules of modern Muay Thai practice.

Muay Thai has been gaining in popularity outside of Southeast Asia as a result of its versatility and usefulness in the UFC and other Mixed Martial Arts competitions.

 

MUAY THAI AS SELF DEFENSE

Unlike other forms of boxing and kickboxing, where the action usually stops in clinch situations, Muay Thai lets the action continue while knees and elbows deliver blows. This makes it a great form of self-defense training that gives you a range of responses to any aggressive action against you including both aggressive and defensive moves.

 

MUAY THAI FOR MMA

Along with Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, Muay Thai has become an MMA staple for many serious fighters. It’s often the style of choice for stand-up fighters with its emphasis on striking and clinching.
Formal Muay Thai techniques are divided into two groups: mae mai or major techniques and luk mai or minor techniques and includes defensive moves like blocking, redirection, avoidance, evasion, disruption and anticipation of your opponent’s moves. Even on the ground, Muay Thai’s use of all eight striking points gives you more options to use.
